The liver is a crucial organ in our body, situated in the upper-right abdomen under the rib cage. It plays a significant role in maintaining our overall health. The liver consists of two primary lobes, the right and left, which are further divided into smaller segments. The liver receives blood from the hepatic artery and the portal vein, both essential for its various physiological functions.
Processing of Bile:
The liver plays a critical role in our digestive system. It produces bile, a greenish fluid that assists in the digestion and absorption of fats. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and then released into the small intestine to help emulsify fats, which allows their breakdown by enzymes. Furthermore, this vital organ synthesizes essential proteins and necessary factors to prevent excessive bleeding. The liver is a critical component of our body, and keeping it healthy and functioning correctly is crucial.
Purifying the blood:
The purifying of blood begins with the kidney’s filters, it purifies our blood by removing harmful substances like bacteria and waste products. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in maintaining our immune system by producing proteins that help fight infections and keep us healthy.
Regulation of glucose levels:
Another critical function of the liver is to regulate blood glucose levels. It stores excess glucose as glycogen when my blood sugar levels are high and releases glucose into the bloodstream when levels drop. Doing so helps prevent fluctuations in blood sugar that can lead to health problems like diabetes. This regulation is crucial for overall energy balance and ensuring my body functions properly.
Processing of Bilirubin:
Bilirubin is a yellow pigment created when red blood cells break down. It's important to note that the liver is responsible for processing and excreting bilirubin into bile. Too much bilirubin in the body can result in jaundice, which is characterized by a yellowing of the skin and eyes. The liver's role in efficiently processing bilirubin is vital for maintaining normal skin and eye color.
Regulation of cholesterol levels:
The liver is involved in regulating cholesterol levels in the body. It produces and secretes cholesterol into the bloodstream and removes excess cholesterol from the blood. Maintaining proper cholesterol levels is essential for good cardiovascular health, as high cholesterol levels can increase the risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease.
Regeneration capacity:
The liver is well-known for its remarkable regenerative capacity. It can regenerate and repair damaged tissue after significant injury or surgery. This ability is attributed to the rapid division of hepatocytes. If part of the liver is removed or damaged, the remaining healthy tissue can multiply and restore liver function over time. This is why liver transplants can be so successful, and living donors can provide a portion of their liver to help save someone's life.
